ECNO Calendar The Edinburgh Centre for Neuro-Oncology (ECNO) is based within the Western General Hospital, Edinburgh. ECNO provides a base for administrative and clinical integration of staff from Neurology, Neurosurgery and Oncology who have a special interest in Neuro-Oncology and who are involved in the joint Neuro-Oncology clinic. ECNO also provides a focus for initial referral, advice, information, co-ordinated management and patient support in Neuro-Oncology. ECNO has a full-time secretary (Gillian MacGruer), two Neuro-Oncology Specialist Nurses (Ms Shanne McNamara and Ms Helen Davidson) and several neuro-oncology consultants (Dr R Grant, Neurologist; Dr S Erridge and Dr S Peoples, Clinical/Radiation Oncologists). The team are supported by consultants in Neuroradiology (Dr R Gibson, Dr D Summers; Dr Z Morris) and neuropathology (Dr C Smith, Dr JW Ironside, Dr L Bridges) who provide diagnostic and management help with interpretation of images and histopathology in the Neuro-Oncology Multidisciplinary Meeting (MDM) every Friday.
Staff | Profile | Dr Sara Erridge
| Dr. Sara Erridge is an NHS Clinical Oncologist specialising in Neuro-Oncology and thoracic malignancies. She trained in Oncology in Edinburgh then worked in Canada before returning to Scotland to take up a consultant post. She leads the service for the radiotherapy and chemotherapy treatments of malignant and benign brain tumours and runs the stereotactic radiosurgery programme. She is a member of the UK Proton Advisory Panel. Not only is she is actively involved in neuro-oncology research in ECNO but is the radiotherapy lead in a number of International trials such as EORTC 26052 and Centric trials and is the UK Principal investigator for BR14 and TAVEREC. She is on the steering committees of the EORTC Radiotherapy Oncology Group and EORTC Brain Tumour Groups. She is also one of two EORTC advisors on quality assurance related to brain tumour trials. In the Edinburgh Cancer Centre she is the Clinical Lead for Clinical Oncology and also nationally is the Deputy Chair of Scottish Radiotherapy Advisory Group that advises Scottish Government Health Department on healthcare planning related to radiotherapy and other oncological issues. | Dr. Robin Grant | Dr. Robin Grant is a consultant NHS neurologist experienced in Neuro-Oncology and is currently the consultant with administrative responsibility in the ECNO. He provides a specialist opinion for cancer patients with neurological symptoms in the oncology wards or through the weekly Joint Neuro-Oncology clinic. At the clinic he sees new patients with suspected brain tumours or cancer and neurological symptoms and follow-up patients with tumour associated epilepsy or patients who have had surgery and radiation therapy to monitor their progress. He was trained in neuro-oncology in Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA. Research interests include outcome assessment and developing a Neuro-Oncology Cochrane CRG and depression in glioma. He is currently the President of the European Association of Neuro-Oncology. | Dr. Sharon Peoples
| Dr Sharon Peoples is a Consultant Clinical Oncologist in the Edinburgh Centre of Neuro Oncology since February 2008. She has a special interest in the management of children and young people with Brain Tumours. | Ms. Shanne McNamara
| Ms. Shanne McNamara is a Specialist Nurse in Neuro-Oncology. She meets patients on admission to the surgical wards or on referral to the Joint Neuro-Oncology clinic. She follows and co-ordinates their care and is their first point of contact for advice and information. She instigated a “Telephone Clinic”, and facilitates a monthly support group for patients with brain tumours. Shanne has background training in oncology nursing and was a Macmillan liaison nurse before her ECNO appointment. She has been involved in clinical research and has performed a randomised controlled trial of “Telephone Clinic vs Standard Care”. She was previously Chairperson of Association of Neuro-Oncology Nurses in the UK (ANON) and is nurse representative on the Executive Board of the European Association of Neuro-Oncology (EANO). | Ms Helen Davidson | Ms. Helen Davidson is a Specialist Nurse in Neuro Oncology
| Dr. Colin Smith
| Dr Colin Smith is a Senior Lecturer in Pathology at the University of Edinburgh and an Honorary Consultant in Neuropathology in NHS Lothian. Neuropathology is responsible for the tissue diagnosis in cases which undergo neurosurgical intervention. The diagnosis is predominantly based on the microscopic architecture of the tumour, although increasingly molecular techniques are being developed to provide greater information in relation to diagnosis and prognosis. We utilise a technique called array CGH (aCGH) in our assessment of selected gliomas, a technique which we believe provides the greatest information from a given tissue sample. Current Neuro-oncology research is in collaboration with Professor Ian Whittle, looking at proteomic profiles of gliomas. Previous studies have assessed the impact of changes to the WHO classification in diagnosis of atypical meningioma. | Professor James Ironside | Professor James Ironside Neuropathologist | Dr. Ally Rooney
| Dr Alasdair Rooney is a Neuro-Oncology Research Fellow. He is an NHS trainee doctor and plans to specialise in neuropsychiatry. As part of an MD, which he is studying at Edinburgh University, Ally is researching aspects of depression in patients with glioma. The study is running until 2010 in Edinburgh and Glasgow and covers most of the Scottish population. He is currently Chairman of the SANON Supportive and Psychological Care sub-group, is active in the Research sub-group and runs the weekly ECNO journal club. He also helps supervise medical students in a number of ongoing short-term projects and accepts clinical referrals of patients with brain tumour and distress. | Dr. Simon Kerrigan
| Dr. Simon Kerrigan is a Fellow in Neuro Oncology and has recently joined the ECNO team. Simon has recently started work as the new neurology neuro-oncology clinical fellow in ECNO. This is a new post that has been very generously made possible via a grant from the Samantha Dickson Brain Tumour Trust. Prior to coming up to Edinburgh Simon trained to be a neurologist in Bristol. The main aim of this year is to give him in depth exposure and training in looking after patients with brain tumours. In particular, he wants to bring his skills as a trainee neurologist to complement the skills of the existing team of doctors including oncologists and neuro-surgeons. After this year he hopes to go on to do some research in the field. | Dr. David Summers
| Dr David Summers Neuroradiologist | | | Dr Zoe Morris Neuroradiologist | Mrs. Gillian MacGruer | Gillian MacGruer is the ECNO Co-ordinator/medical secretary. Gillian has 12 years experience in the NHS with GP Practices and other departments in the hospital. Gillian organises appointments and liaises with GP's/peripheral hospitals and wards within the WGH.
